The Kettle

Alexis Gallagher          February 19th, 2026 Writing prompt: write about an everyday object that has magical powers or comes to life The Kettle   Traveling around to various yard sales is a favorite pastime of mine. One Saturday it was a cool spring day. It was the kind of day perfect for a hot drink from your local coffeeshop. I was at a garage sale.  “Morning, this is an estate sale.” the woman behind the cash table said as she greeted everyone who came to browse.   As I was walking through the aisles of various items: silverware, china, lamps, random nik naks, stuffed animals, china dolls and a seemingly shiny new stove kettle. I slowly reached for the kettle watching my reflection in it. How strange to see something completely new looking when everything around it looked aged. I took the kettle up to the table and paid $5 for it. With my unexpected purchase I made my way to the bus stop and rode...

A ghost and his dog

April 29th, 2025 By Alexis Gallagher Writing prompt: POV of a ghost                A Ghost and His Dog  There is a middle aged man named Gary who was walking with his Alaskan Husky dog named Bear along a river bank near Portland Oregon where he lived. It was a foggy rainy morning when Gary lost his footing along the riverbank and fell into the river where he drowned.     Now Gary was learning what he could do as a ghost. He was feeling like he could do a lot more being invisible, which has its downside. Learning to haunt people he was reading his new book 101 ways for ghosts to haunt people for ghost dummies. Gary was on a mission now, he wanted to find his dog Bear.     Gary enjoyed hanging out by the cemetery by the river where he could hopefully try and find Bear. Unfortunately he was having no luck.   That's when he noticed two men walking dogs. It was also a foggy rainy morning.    Little d...

photo memories

Writing Prompt: Cleaning your room you find an old photograph. Pleasant memories awake.   Do you ever get that feeling of needing to organize and clean a space in a room or a room in your home? Well that’s the feeling I got recently with my bedroom.   In my bedroom I have two bookshelves, my dresser, a nightstand and under my bed I have two boxes. Between my bookshelves, nightstand and the two boxes under my bed that’s a lot to organize and go through.    I decided to start with my smaller bookshelf that has several magazine holders on it with folders of somewhat useless stuff. As I was going through the folders I came upon some old photographs of my childhood days which brought some good memories.   The first photo I came across was of me on a horse. Growing up I tried a lot of different activities. Baseball, Karate, Swimming, Field Hockey Even Horse Riding lessons. The Horse Riding lessons lasted the longest. I wasn’t too bad at it. I could walk, trot,...

people watching

Writing Prompt: Everyday for about an hour you observe people in the park. What did you see today?     People watching is something you can do in a mall, coffee shop, or even in a park. This has been one of my favorite activities this past summer in a park. I would regulate the same park almost everyday. First I would grab a tea or smoothie and then head off to the park with a notebook for writing and a book for reading.    As I sat on the bench I watched people out walking with kids and or pets. Some were biking, rollerblading and running. The bikers made me want to go get my bike and ride. Rollerblader made me remember how when I was a kid I would rollerblade around a school as my parents played tennis. Joggers remind me of how my feet hurt sometimes, that's why I stick to biking and the gym.     Looking over to the grass I notice some people are lying on towels by themselves reading and tanning, others are in a group sitting and chatting, listening...

Missing my stop

Writing Prompt: You miss your destination by several stops, when you fall asleep on a train.   I often see an occasional person on the train sleeping and will wonder what happens when they miss their stop?    That happened to me recently after a long day at work. It was a busy Christmas Eve and I was exhausted. As I got onto the train I decided to rest my head against the window just for a bit. Before I knew it I was asleep and completely missed my stop.     When I woke up I panicked and felt unsettled not knowing exactly where I was. It took a few minutes for me to get my bearings before I realized that I had fallen asleep and missed my stop. I quickly got off at the next stop which was metrotown so that I could switch trains and head back to hopefully not fall asleep again on my way to lougheed station. I decided to go to the nearest Tim Hortons before getting back on the train and getting myself a large cup of coffee to keep me awake this time arou...

Briar

My Cat Briar A few months  into  2015 my Mom  and I went  to the local  animal shelter.   I was feeling nervous and a little scared,  not quite sure how ready  I actually was to have a pet of my own.  I would  have to  look  after  this pet on my own and it would rely on me that would  be a big thing.   We looked  at a few cats and eventually decided  on White female cat with  green eyes named Briar.   The first  few weeks with Briar took  some  adjusting for both of us. Getting  to know  each other,  bond, play, feeding and cleaning.  I would  put music on  whenever  I went out so that she could feel comfortable.  She would  hide  most  ...
